Blessed Angela
Twice a year Williamsburg Presbyterian Church has a long history of preparing and serving a meal at the Felician Center for the residents of Thorne Avenue. Whenever I am available, I like to attend. Providing a hot, nourishing meal to people who are hungry is a simple way that we can be the hands of Christ in our community. The Blessed Angela meal is not simply about nourishing their bodies. It’s much more. What I appreciate the most about this ministry is that after everyone is served, we fix a plate and sit down to have conversation with these strangers who are friends in Christ. During our table time together, we get to find out how God is working in their lives. We get to know their concerns, their joys, their hopes, and then we get to share how God is working in our lives as well. Unlike many soup kitchens that I have been a part of in the past, through the Blessed Angela meal, those being served and those serving are all nourished through our time of sharing and conversation with one another. Through our encounters with one another, we see the face of Jesus.
In Matthew’s gospel the faithful ask, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you as a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? Jesus replies, “Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”. Matthew 25:37-40
If you are able to help serve on Tuesday, September 24, please arrive at the Center by 10:30. If you would like to help provide food, or money to purchase the food, please contact Bitzie Owens by Sunday, September 22.
Also, please remember that we are still looking for a few household items for the Filipino family that is relocating to Kingstree at the beginning of October. If you have a queen size mattress set or a dresser that you would be willing to donate, please contact Jean Nexsen.
Peace, Josie
