P.D.A.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is our denomination’s response organization for disasters. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, famine, in all of these situations, PDA responds, not only in the United States, but also around the world. One Sunday in worship, I mentioned that many years ago Christian organizations in the US decided to divide the responsibilities in recovery efforts in order to be more helpful. There are three key phases to recovery: 1) providing basic supplies for immediate crisis (food, water, temporary shelter), 2) cleaning out debris and damaged structures, and 3) rebuilding. Our denomination focuses primarily on the rebuilding phase. Currently PDA is assessing conditions to set up work camps for the rebuilding of homes and lives in FL, GA, SC, NC, and TN in response to Helene and Milton. Because damage is so vast, and so much has to be done prior to rebuilding, it will take a while to get worksites ready. I have heard some of you are interested to be a part of workcamps in Western North Carolina. As soon as I am aware that sites are open and ready for volunteers I will let you know. We can try to organize some crews to go up and help. And we can certainly invite others to join in on the efforts! All skills and skill levels will be needed, not to mention people to cook and serve as runners for the teams of volunteers.
In the meantime, we can continue to help by collecting items that can be distributed through Waynesville Presbyterian Church. Thank you for your generous hearts and thank you for your willingness to help with the cleaning and medical supplies, water, food, and items for colder weather.
Peace, Josie
