Shalom!
I don’t know if you have ever noticed this, however, in many cultures the same word used for a greeting is also used for a sending off. For instance, in Hawaiian Aloha is used for hello and goodbye. In Italian it is Ciao. In Greek it is Yiasou. In Hebrew that word is Shalom. We often think of the definition of Shalom as peace, but actually it is much more than that. It is a blessing. Whether greeting someone when they arrive or saying goodbye, Shalom means “May you be full of well being” or “May you experience tranquility.” The Apostle Paul expressed it like this, “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.” (2 Thes. 3:16) The word used for peace in the original text is Shalom.
Church, Sunday in worship you eloquently and profoundly expressed Shalom to me. Through your comments, your gifts, your sweet notes, your hugs, the food and a whole lotta deviled eggs at lunch, you expressed your thanks for the time we have had together and you also expressed your love. I am humbled and honored. My heart is full and I feel a deep sense of tranquility (Shalom) as I clear out the office and say a few more good-byes.
Over the course of the ten years that I have known you, and two terms that I have served you, I have told people far and wide that you are the kindest, most supportive, and loving congregation that I have ever encountered. And anyone fortunate enough to serve as your pastor would be a very lucky gal or fella. April 1st Rev. David Ruth will return to begin his new ministry with you. I know you are excited. People have been cleaning the Manse, lining up meals, and preparing for his arrival. Why? Because you want him to experience tranquility. I know you are ready to greet him with Shalom.
In comings and goings, in the deepest sense, you express Shalom. Thank you. I am grateful for my time with you these past few years. I am honored to have had another opportunity to pastor Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Thank you for allowing me to walk with you on your journey of faith. There have been challenges, trials, and celebrations along the way, and our lives are richer and fuller because of the time we shared together. Shalom Church. Shalom.
Peace, Josie
